This year, the theme for World Mental Health Day is: Mental Health in the Workplace. So, our Pastoral and Mental Health Lead, Sally, has written a post for young people with some tips for supporting their mental health at work.
mental health in the workplace
We may often neglect our mental health in the workplace, as we feel that we must be resilient, strong and able to face challenges. However, this may not work out well for us, as we are not looking after our own needs, and are more focused on other peoples!
Mental health in the workplace is very important, as our working life takes up a vast amount of our lives. Also, our work is important for us, in terms of our self-recognition, value and self-confidence. Therefore, it is always worth going the extra mile to make sure that we are okay, and in a good place emotionally.
Here are some ideas how young people can take care of their mental health in the workplace:
Don’t be afraid to ask for help – If you feel that you are struggling at work, talk with a colleague, ask Human Resources for some support (Employment Assisted Programmes) and/or visit your GP.
Take the necessary breaks that you need when at work – having these breaks will help you to feel refreshed and focused when you come back to your work.
Eat Well – A healthy diet can help you to feel so much better both physically and emotionally. Have a read up on ‘good mood food’!
Exercise – this can help so much with general wellbeing. Getting in a routine of doing exercise will help you feel emotionally and physically stronger and happier. This will in turn, help us be our best in work!
Sleep well – Not having enough sleep can make you feel tired, miserable and anxious. If you get good amounts of sleep, this will help us be happier and more settled in our work and beyond!
Have boundaries in place – Be clear around work and your personal life and space.
Connect with your positive contacts – Keep in touch with those around you who care for you and are positive for you and will support you when needed. These are important people!
So, please be mindful of the above and remember your own wellbeing in the bigger picture of your work-life. We are much more effective and happier when we are also taking care of our own needs and support systems.
Take care, Sally
